Sweep AI
AI-powered junior developer that handles GitHub issues and PRs.
About
Sweep began as an open-source AI developer that turned GitHub issues into pull requests: given a bug report or feature request, it would read the repository, plan a change, write the code, and open a PR for human review, handling small fixes, features, and refactors. That issue-to-PR system, released under the Apache 2.0 license, remains public in the sweepai/sweep repository but is no longer the team's focus. Sweep has since pivoted to an AI coding assistant delivered as a plugin for JetBrains IDEs, bringing code assistance directly into IntelliJ-family editors rather than operating autonomously on GitHub. The original project still interests developers studying autonomous coding agents or wanting a self-hostable reference for issue-driven automation, while the current product targets JetBrains users who want an assistant inside their IDE. The repository sees little active development now that the team's effort has moved to the commercial plugin.
Should you use Sweep AI?
Pick it when
Pick the open repo if you are studying issue-to-PR automation and want a self-hostable reference that reads a repository, plans a change, and opens a pull request for review. Pick the current product only if you work in IntelliJ-family IDEs.
Look elsewhere when
Skip the open-source version for production automation: the team's effort moved to a commercial JetBrains plugin and the repo sees little activity. OpenHands is a maintained open agent for issue-style tasks, and Claude Code works from @claude on GitHub.
Alternatives to Sweep AI
- SWE-Agent
MIT research agent purpose-built for resolving real GitHub issues, harder to set up but a stronger base for issue-solving experiments than an idle repo.
- Claude Code
Responds to @claude on GitHub issues and pull requests and is actively developed, but proprietary and requires a paid Anthropic plan.
- OpenHands
Actively developed MIT autonomous agent with a Python SDK for issue-style tasks, though it takes more setup and is rated harder to run.
- Kilo Code
Open MIT agent with a JetBrains extension, an alternative to Sweep's commercial plugin if you want auditable agent code in IntelliJ editors.
