Cline

Working inside VS Code, a terminal, or a desktop app, Cline takes a coding request, reads the relevant files, proposes edits as reviewable diffs, runs shell commands, and watches compiler and linter output to fix its own mistakes. Plan mode lets it investigate and settle on an approach before Act mode edits anything; unless auto-approve is on, it waits for a yes before each edit or shell command, and checkpoints let you rewind. You bring your own model: Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter, Bedrock, Vertex, Groq, any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, or local models served by Ollama or LM Studio, paying the provider directly. Project conventions go in .clinerules files, MCP servers add external tools, and the npm-installed CLI adds headless runs for CI, cron-scheduled agents, multi-agent teams, and chat bridges to Slack, Telegram, and Discord. A TypeScript SDK exposes the same engine for custom agents. The extension, CLI, SDK, and desktop app are Apache 2.0 and usable commercially, but the JetBrains plugin is closed source. Suited to developers wanting an agentic assistant without model vendor lock-in.
