SmolLM
Hugging Face's fully open small language models, from 135M to 3B parameters, with training code and data.
About
Published by Hugging Face under its HuggingFaceTB organization, this project bundles a family of compact, fully open language models with the code used to train them. The current flagship, SmolLM3, has 3 billion parameters, saw roughly 11 trillion training tokens, and ships as a base model plus an instruct model that toggles between an extended thinking mode and a direct answer mode. It covers English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese and reaches 128k tokens of context via YaRN extrapolation. The earlier SmolLM2 generation offers 135M, 360M, and 1.7B sizes small enough for phones, browsers, and CPU-only machines. The GitHub repo collects pretraining and post-training configs, evaluation scripts, data curation notes, and local inference examples for llama.cpp, MLX, MLC, and Transformers.js, and it also hosts the SmolVLM vision-language models. Weights are on the Hugging Face Hub under Apache 2.0, which allows commercial deployment, and the pretraining and instruction datasets are public as well. Choose it for on-device assistants, edge prototypes, or as a worked reference for how small models are built end to end.
Should you use SmolLM?
Pick it when
Pick this when the model has to run on a CPU or phone with very little memory, from 135M up to 3B, or when you want published datasets and a training recipe to reproduce or retrain small models yourself.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it if you need image or audio input, or more capability than its sizes give: MiniCPM reports 1B-class leading scores and has vision siblings, and Gemma 4's E2B and E4B add images and audio on edge hardware.
Alternatives to SmolLM
- MiniCPM
Apache-2.0 edge family that reports 1B-class leading benchmark results and adds MiniCPM-V multimodal models.
- TinyLlama
1.1B with Llama 2 architecture that drops into Llama tooling and doubles as a speculative-decoding draft model.
- SmolVLM
Hugging Face's compact vision sibling from 256M to 2.2B, for when the small model has to read images or video.
- OpenELM
Apple's 270M to 3B with full CoreNet recipes and MLX examples, but under a non-standard Apple license.
