About

Released by the Chinese lab DeepSeek in December 2024, this open-weight mixture-of-experts model sends each token through roughly 37B of its 671B parameters, which keeps per-token compute far below a dense model of similar scale. Its design pairs latent attention, which shrinks the KV cache, with a routing scheme that balances experts without an auxiliary loss term, plus a multi-token prediction head that can act as a draft model for speculative decoding. Base and chat weights offer a 128K context window and are stored natively in FP8, with a conversion script for BF16. The repo itself holds only a small reference demo for Linux and Python 3.10; real deployments run through SGLang, vLLM, LMDeploy, TensorRT-LLM or LightLLM, with AMD and Huawei Ascend paths too. The checkpoint is close to 700 GB, so plan on a large multi-GPU server or two eight-GPU nodes. Code is MIT; the original weights use the DeepSeek Model License, which permits commercial use with use-based restrictions, while later checkpoints such as V3-0324, V3.1 and V3.2 carry MIT. Best for teams self-hosting a frontier-class model.

Should you use DeepSeek-V3?

Pick it when

Pick this when you want a strong general-purpose model you host yourself on a multi-GPU cluster, with only 37B of its 671B parameters active per token keeping per-token compute well below its full size.

Look elsewhere when

Skip it if you lack cluster hardware or want plain MIT terms: 671B total weights are heavy and its DeepSeek License is custom. DeepSeek-V4 is MIT, and gpt-oss or Qwen 3 MoE models fit far smaller setups.

Alternatives to DeepSeek-V3

  • DeepSeek-V4

Newer generation under plain MIT with reasoning effort levels and a lighter V4-Flash line, though the Pro flagship is 1.7T for GB300 nodes.

  • DeepSeek-R1

Same family tuned for explicit chain-of-thought under MIT, with distilled sizes from 1.5B to 70B that avoid cluster hosting entirely.

  • Kimi K2

Trillion-parameter MoE with 32B active built for agentic tool use under Modified MIT, but an even bigger checkpoint to host than V3.

  • GLM-5

MIT MoE around 750B with about 40B active, tuned for coding and agents with FP8 builds, in a similar hosting class under looser terms.
