MiniCPM
OpenBMB's family of compact Apache 2.0 language models sized for phones, laptops and edge devices.
About
Small enough for phones and laptops, the MiniCPM models from OpenBMB aim for top quality at roughly 1 to 8 billion parameters. The newest MiniCPM5 checkpoints, a 1B released in May 2026 and a 2B in September 2026, use the standard Llama architecture with a 131K-token context window, so llama.cpp, Ollama, vLLM, SGLang, MLX, LM Studio and Hugging Face Transformers load them without custom code, with official GGUF and MLX builds. In the team's own tests the 2B beats similar-size open models on average, notably in code, math, long context, tool use and agents. Earlier branches remain available, including MiniCPM4 and 4.1 with trainable sparse attention, MiniCPM-SALA for million-token context, and ternary BitCPM variants; vision models live in the separate MiniCPM-V repository. The repo adds step-by-step guides for serving and for tuning with TRL, LLaMA-Factory, ms-swift and Unsloth, and OpenBMB has published much of the training data. Code and weights are Apache 2.0, which permits commercial use. A 2B model runs on CPU through llama.cpp or on a modest GPU, a fit for offline assistants, embedded agents and cheap fine-tuning tests.
Should you use MiniCPM?
Pick it when
Pick this for on-device or CPU-only deployments, such as phone or laptop assistants, where a 1B-class model has to handle reasoning, code, and agent tasks, with the MiniCPM-V line covering image input in the same family.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it when answer quality matters more than footprint: a 1B model will not match 8B to 30B models such as Qwen or Gemma 4 on hard tasks. If you need published training data for research, SmolLM is the more open choice.
Alternatives to MiniCPM
- SmolLM
Publishes its datasets and training recipe and goes as small as 135M, while MiniCPM claims 1B-class state of the art on reasoning, code, and agent tasks.
- Gemma 4
E2B and E4B edge variants add native audio input and 140+ languages under Apache-2.0, at a somewhat larger footprint than a 1B model.
- Phi-3
MIT licensed 3.8B Mini with a 128K context variant, more capacity than a 1B model, but it wants a 4 GB-class GPU where MiniCPM runs on CPU.
- TinyLlama
Same 1.1B size class with Llama 2 architecture that drops into Llama tooling, but an older pretraining experiment with no multimodal siblings.
