SAM 3D Body
Meta's promptable model that recovers full-body 3D human meshes with hands and feet from one image.
About
Meta extended the Segment Anything line into human mesh recovery with SAM 3D Body, which lifts a single RGB image into a full 3D human, estimating body, hand, and foot pose on the Momentum Human Rig, a parametric representation that decouples skeletal structure from surface shape for more accurate fits. Promptability is the differentiator: 2D keypoints and segmentation masks steer the estimate toward a particular person in a crowded frame or correct a bad fit, the same interaction style as the image SAM models. Two checkpoints are published, an 840M DINOv3-H+ encoder and a 631M ViT-H, gated behind an access request on Hugging Face, and the November 2025 release reports 54.8 MPJPE on the 3DPW benchmark, ahead of CameraHMR and HMR2.0b. Code, a demo script, a notebook, and a hosted playground demo accompany a released training dataset. Everything ships under Meta's SAM License rather than a standard open-source license, permitting broad use with some restrictions, and the model has settled quickly into pose tracking, motion capture, and avatar pipelines.
Should you use SAM 3D Body?
Pick it when
Use SAM 3D Body when you need a full 3D human mesh with hands and feet from one photo, and want to steer it with 2D keypoints or masks to pick a person in a crowd or fix a bad fit, for mocap or avatar work.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it if 2D keypoints are enough, where RTMPose or OpenPose are lighter, or for general objects, where SAM 3D Objects applies. Weights are gated behind an access request and use Meta's custom SAM License.
Alternatives to SAM 3D Body
- SAM 3D Objects
Same family and license, but reconstructs objects and scene layout from a photo instead of human bodies.
- RTMPose
Apache-2.0 real-time keypoint models on about 4 GB, including RTMW3D 3D joints, when you need speed over a promptable full-body mesh.
- OpenPose
Real-time 2D body, foot, hand, and face keypoints with a CPU-only backend, but no 3D mesh, and commercial use needs a paid CMU license.
