About

PuLID, short for Pure and Lightning ID customization, is a ByteDance research project accepted to NeurIPS 2024 that adds high-fidelity identity control to diffusion models without any per-subject fine-tuning. Given a face photo, it generates new images that preserve the person's identity across poses, expressions, styles, and scenes. Its distinguishing technique is contrastive alignment, which minimizes disruption to the base model's behavior so prompts stay editable and outputs remain natural. Implementations cover both SDXL and FLUX, with PuLID-v1.1 improving compatibility, editability, and facial similarity over the first release, and PuLID-FLUX running on consumer GPUs with 16 GB of VRAM. The Apache 2.0 licensed repository provides local Gradio demos alongside hosted Hugging Face demos, and the community has built ComfyUI nodes, WebUI extensions, and Replicate deployments around it. Common uses include consistent-character generation and personalized portrait work.

Should you use PuLID?

Pick it when

Pick PuLID when a specific face must stay consistent across poses, styles, and scenes without training, especially on a FLUX pipeline, where PuLID-FLUX runs on a 16 GB consumer GPU, or on SDXL when prompts must stay editable.

Look elsewhere when

Skip PuLID-FLUX for a commercial product, since it runs on FLUX.1 dev, whose license needs a paid BFL deal for commercial deployment, and skip PuLID for an easy setup: PhotoMaker on SDXL is simpler and fully Apache-2.0.

Alternatives to PuLID

  • InstantID

Single-photo identity on SDXL with landmark-driven pose control, but its bundled InsightFace models are restricted to non-commercial research.

  • PhotoMaker

Fuses several reference photos into one identity on SDXL with Apache-2.0 weights and easier setup, but has no FLUX version.

  • IP-Adapter

General image prompting with FaceID variants and wide UI support, easier to mix with style references, but not built around identity fidelity.
