About
InstantID generates identity-preserving images from a single reference face photo with no per-subject training or fine-tuning. The tuning-free pipeline extracts facial embeddings and keypoints with InsightFace's AntelopeV2 model, conditions generation through IdentityNet, a ControlNet-style network driven by facial landmarks, and injects the identity embedding via an IP-Adapter module on top of a Stable Diffusion XL base. The result places a specific person into new styles and scenes from a text prompt while keeping the face recognizable, and it works with community SDXL checkpoints as well as LCM-LoRA for accelerated generation in around 10 steps. Developed by the InstantX team, the code is Apache 2.0 licensed, though the bundled InsightFace models are restricted to non-commercial research use. Adoption spans Hugging Face Spaces demos plus ComfyUI and WebUI integrations, and it is widely used for stylized portraits, avatars, and character-consistent image generation.
Should you use InstantID?
Pick it when
Pick InstantID when you have one face photo and need stylized portraits or avatars of that person on SDXL with no training, and want landmark-driven control over the face through its IdentityNet, with LCM-LoRA for 10-step runs.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it for a commercial product unless you sort out face model licensing: the bundled InsightFace models are non-commercial research only. For FLUX support or more editable results try PuLID; with several photos, PhotoMaker.
Alternatives to InstantID
- PuLID
Works on both SDXL and FLUX and uses contrastive alignment to keep prompts editable, but it is harder to set up and PuLID-FLUX wants 16 GB.
- PhotoMaker
Fuses several reference photos into a stacked ID embedding for realistic portraits, better with multiple shots, without InstantID's landmark network.
- IP-Adapter
General image-prompt adapter whose FaceID variants also target identity, more widely integrated but with fewer face-specific parts than InstantID.
- DreamBooth
Fine-tunes on three to five photos of a subject for a reusable model, slower to set up than zero-shot InstantID but not tied to one reference photo.
