About
Chroma is an 8.9B parameter text-to-image model trained by Lodestone Rock on top of the FLUX.1-schnell architecture and released fully under Apache 2.0, sidestepping the noncommercial restrictions attached to FLUX.1-dev derivatives. Training used a 5 million sample dataset curated from a 20 million image pool spanning artistic, photographic, and niche styles, and the model is explicitly positioned as a neutral base for further fine-tuning rather than a polished end-user checkpoint. The current flagship release, Chroma1-HD, is distributed through Hugging Face, where it draws tens of thousands of downloads per month and has already accumulated adapters, finetunes, merges, and quantized variants; the training codebase, a flow matching toolkit with streaming dataloaders and multi-GPU support, is public in the lodestone-rock/flow repository under Apache 2.0 as well. In practice most people run it inside ComfyUI or other FLUX-compatible frontends on a consumer GPU, and its permissive license and broad stylistic range have made it one of the most popular community-trained open base models.
Should you use Chroma?
Pick it when
Pick Chroma when you want a FLUX-architecture base you can fine-tune, merge, and use commercially under Apache-2.0, and you are training LoRAs or finetunes on a consumer GPU rather than using a finished checkpoint as-is.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it if you want polished results straight from the prompt: it is positioned as a neutral base, not an end-user model. FLUX.1 schnell or a tuned SDXL checkpoint like Juggernaut XL give finished output with less prompt work.
Alternatives to Chroma
- FLUX.1
Schnell is the Apache-2.0 model Chroma was rebuilt from and is distilled for fast few-step output, but the dev variant carries a non-commercial license.
- Stable Diffusion XL
Much smaller and runs on around 8 GB with a far larger LoRA and ControlNet ecosystem, but an older generation of model than the FLUX design Chroma builds on.
- Illustrious-XL
Better base if your fine-tuning target is anime: a proven SDXL model with close to 200 finetunes and merges, under RAIL++-M instead of Apache-2.0.
- Lumina-Image 2.0
Smaller 2.6B Apache-2.0 base with fine-tuning code included that fits consumer cards more easily, but with a far smaller community of adapters.
