About

Gemma 3 is Google DeepMind's open-weight language model family, built from Gemini research and released in 1B, 4B, 12B, and 27B parameter sizes. The models handle a 128K-token context window, accept image input on the larger variants, support function calling and more than 35 languages, and are designed so that even the 27B model runs on a single GPU or TPU host. The official google-deepmind/gemma repository contains a JAX library, published as the gemma package on PyPI, for inference and fine-tuning: a ChatSampler API handles multi-turn conversation across Gemma generations, and documented workflows cover LoRA as well as full fine-tuning on CPU, GPU, or TPU. Weights are distributed through channels such as Kaggle and Hugging Face and also run in common runtimes outside the JAX ecosystem. Released under the Gemma license, which allows commercial use subject to a use policy, the family targets developers and researchers who want capable models they can host and customize themselves.

Should you use Gemma 3?

Pick it when

Pick this when you want a single-GPU model with 128K context, image input, and function calling, especially if you fine-tune in JAX or on TPUs with the official gemma library and its LoRA or full fine-tuning recipes.

Look elsewhere when

Skip it if the custom Gemma License or its use policy is a blocker for your legal team: Gemma 4 offers the same lineage under Apache-2.0 with longer context, and Qwen 2.5 / Qwen 3 covers more languages.

Alternatives to Gemma 3

  • Gemma 4

Apache-2.0, up to 256K context, audio input on small models, and 140+ languages; the newer choice unless you depend on Gemma 3 tooling.

  • Qwen 2.5 / Qwen 3

Apache-2.0 with thinking and non-thinking modes and 100+ languages, but no image input in the core line; pair it with Qwen-VL for vision.

  • Llama 3.2

Splits text-only 1B and 3B edge models from 11B and 90B vision models, with FP8 and Int4 options, under the Llama 3.2 license.

  • Phi-4

MIT-licensed 14B focused on reasoning, math, and coding, text-only, for when logic depth matters more than vision or multilingual reach.
