About

Released by Microsoft Research in December 2024, Phi-4 packs 14 billion parameters into a dense decoder-only transformer with a 16K-token context window. Training covered 9.8 trillion tokens of filtered web pages, books and Q&A collections Microsoft obtained, and a large share of synthetic textbook-style material written to teach math, logic and coding; safety and instruction tuning used SFT followed by rounds of DPO. Microsoft's simple-evals results put it close to far larger models on MATH and GPQA, yet very low on the SimpleQA factual recall test, so it reasons better than it remembers. Prompts use a chat template with im_start style tags and the model loads through Transformers; official GGUF weights exist, and Ollama carries phi4. A 4-bit quantized copy fits on a 12 GB consumer card, while unquantized bf16 weights need close to 30 GB. Later relatives include Phi-4-mini, Phi-4-multimodal and Phi-4-reasoning variants. All use the MIT license, which permits commercial use and fine-tuning. Best for developers who want a local model for math, logic or structured problem solving on one workstation GPU, mainly in English.

Should you use Phi-4?

Pick it when

Pick this when you need strong math, reasoning, and coding from a single 14B model on a memory-constrained GPU, under MIT terms that leave commercial use unrestricted.

Look elsewhere when

Skip it if you need image input, context beyond its 16K window, or broad multilingual support, since only a small share of its training data is multilingual. Gemma 3 or Qwen cover those, and DeepSeek-R1 distills give explicit chain-of-thought.

Alternatives to Phi-4

  • Phi-3

The 3.8B Mini fits 4 GB and has a 128K context variant, trading reasoning depth for a much smaller footprint.

  • DeepSeek-R1

MIT reasoning model with explicit chain-of-thought and distills from 1.5B to 70B, so you can size up or down around 14B.

  • Qwen 2.5 / Qwen 3

Apache-2.0 with a thinking mode, 100+ languages, and sizes on both sides of 14B, broader than Phi-4's English-centric focus.

  • gpt-oss

Apache-2.0 20B MoE reasoning model in 16 GB with configurable effort and built-in tools, but needs the harmony format.
