Gemma 2
Google's second-generation open-weight Gemma models in 2B, 9B and 27B sizes, base and chat-tuned.
About
Google DeepMind shipped the second Gemma generation in mid 2024 as English text models at three sizes, roughly 2.6, 9 and 27 billion parameters, each offered as a pretrained checkpoint and an instruction-tuned chat version. They draw on the same research as Gemini, were trained on TPUv5p hardware with 2, 8 and 13 trillion tokens respectively, and accept an 8K-token context, which is short by current standards. Weights sit on Hugging Face and Kaggle behind a click-through license, and load in Transformers, Keras and JAX, or community runtimes such as Ollama and llama.cpp. Ollama's default 9B build is about 5.4 GB and fits a mid-range consumer GPU or a recent laptop, while its 27B build is about 16 GB. The Gemma Terms of Use allow commercial deployment but bind you and your downstream users to Google's prohibited-use policy, so this is not an OSI-approved license. Gemma 3 and the Apache-licensed Gemma 4 have since added image input and far longer context, so Gemma 2 now mainly serves existing deployments, fine-tunes built on it, and interpretability work such as the original Gemma Scope sparse autoencoders, which were trained on it.
Should you use Gemma 2?
Pick it when
Pick this for English summarization, QA, or chat on a single GPU or laptop when you already have pipelines, evaluations, or fine-tunes built around the Gemma 2 2B, 9B, or 27B checkpoints.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it for new projects: Gemma 3 adds 128K context, image input, and 35+ languages, and Gemma 4 moves to Apache-2.0. Gemma 2 is English-focused and keeps the custom Gemma License.
Alternatives to Gemma 2
- Gemma 3
Same lineage with 128K context, image input on larger sizes, function calling, and 35+ languages, still under the Gemma License.
- Gemma 4
Apache-2.0 instead of custom terms, with multimodal input and up to 256K context; the E2B and E4B run without a discrete GPU.
- Phi-3
MIT-licensed small models from 3.8B to 14B with 128K context variants, a permissive alternative at similar laptop-scale budgets.
- Llama 3.2
1B and 3B text models for edge plus 11B and 90B vision models with 128K context, under the Llama 3.2 Community License.
