TRL
Hugging Face library and CLI for SFT, DPO, GRPO and other post-training methods on Transformers models.
About
Post-training, the stage that turns a pretrained language model into an instruction follower or a reasoning model, is what Hugging Face's TRL library packages up. It ships trainers for supervised fine-tuning, reward modeling, DPO and KTO preference tuning, online reinforcement learning methods such as GRPO and RLOO, and distillation, each a thin layer over the Transformers Trainer so Hub models and datasets plug straight in. Scaling goes through Accelerate, with DDP or DeepSpeed taking a run from one GPU to a multi-node cluster, and PEFT support means LoRA or QLoRA adapters let mid-sized models train on a single card with modest memory. Online methods can hand generation to a vLLM server for faster sampling, and Unsloth and Liger kernel integrations cut memory further. A trl command line tool starts SFT, DPO or KTO jobs from flags or a YAML config without writing Python. Install with pip; in practice an NVIDIA GPU is needed beyond toy models. TRL is Apache 2.0 and fine for commercial work, though your base model's license still applies. Built for ML engineers and researchers aligning or specializing open models.
Should you use TRL?
Pick it when
Use it when you write Python and want the reference Hugging Face library for SFT, DPO, GRPO, and reward modeling on Transformers models, with PEFT and quantization for single-GPU runs and a path to multi-node clusters.
Look elsewhere when
If you want a GUI or no-code config, LLaMA-Factory or H2O LLM Studio are easier. For RL on 70B-plus models with Ray or Megatron, OpenRLHF or verl are purpose-built; for the lowest memory on one consumer GPU, add Unsloth.
Alternatives to TRL
- LLaMA-Factory
Web UI and CLI over the same Hugging Face ecosystem with no code required, but less room for custom objectives.
- Axolotl
YAML configs over the Hugging Face training stack for reproducible runs; less code to write, less control over the loop.
- verl
Built for cluster-scale PPO and GRPO with Megatron and vLLM or SGLang rollouts; much heavier to set up than TRL.
- Unsloth
Patches Hugging Face training internals to cut memory on consumer GPUs while keeping a similar trainer workflow.
