Sentence-Transformers
Framework for computing dense vector representations of sentences and paragraphs.
About
Sentence-Transformers, also known as SBERT, is a Python framework for computing text and image embeddings and reranking scores with neural models. It covers three model families: dense embedding models for semantic similarity, cross-encoders that score text pairs for reranking search results, and sparse encoders for efficient retrieval. More than 15,000 compatible pretrained models are available on the Hugging Face Hub spanning over 100 languages, many ranking well on the MTEB embeddings benchmark, and the library provides training APIs with more than 20 loss functions for fine-tuning embedding models and around 10 for rerankers. Typical applications include semantic search, similarity scoring, paraphrase mining, clustering, duplicate detection, and retrieval-augmented generation pipelines. The project began at the Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing Lab at TU Darmstadt and is now maintained at Hugging Face; it installs with pip, requires Python 3.10 or newer with PyTorch, and is open source under the Apache 2.0 license.
Should you use Sentence-Transformers?
Pick it when
Pick it when you need embeddings or rerankers for semantic search, deduplication, clustering, or RAG, want to choose among thousands of Hub models, and may fine-tune on your own pairs with its training losses.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it if you cannot ship PyTorch, for example in slim containers or serverless functions, where FastEmbed's ONNX runtime is lighter. If what you want is labels rather than vectors, SetFit builds a classifier on top of it.
Alternatives to Sentence-Transformers
- FastEmbed
ONNX-based embeddings without PyTorch, lighter for CPU and serverless deployment, but a smaller model selection and no training API.
- FlagEmbedding (BGE)
BAAI's toolkit for the BGE embedding and reranker family, a focused model line, while Sentence-Transformers is model-agnostic across the Hub.
- SetFit
Builds on Sentence Transformers to train few-shot classifiers, the right layer when you need labels rather than raw vectors.
- txtai
Wraps embeddings in a full searchable index with storage and workflows, less setup for semantic search, but less control over model training.
