SDXL-Lightning
Distilled SDXL model by ByteDance enabling 2-8 step image generation.
About
SDXL-Lightning compresses Stable Diffusion XL inference from dozens of sampling steps down to as few as one. ByteDance trained it with progressive adversarial diffusion distillation, distilling stable-diffusion-xl-base-1.0 into checkpoints that generate 1024x1024 images in 1, 2, 4, or 8 steps. Each step count ships in two forms: full UNet weights, which give the best quality for that configuration, and LoRA adapters that can be applied to other SDXL-derived base models to accelerate them. The one-step checkpoint is explicitly experimental, with the two-step and higher variants recommended for reliable output, and quality generally improves with step count. The models load through the Diffusers library and ComfyUI, and the approach is documented in an accompanying research paper. Distributed on Hugging Face under an OpenRAIL++ license, SDXL-Lightning is used wherever generation speed matters: interactive tools, real-time previews, and high-volume or cost-sensitive inference.
Should you use SDXL-Lightning?
Pick it when
Pick SDXL-Lightning when speed matters at full 1024px, for interactive tools, live previews, or high-volume batches, especially if you want a LoRA that accelerates the SDXL fine-tune you already use.
Look elsewhere when
Skip the 1-step checkpoint for anything reliable, since it is experimental, and skip the family when fidelity or text in images matter most: full-step SDXL fine-tunes or Z-Image handle those better.
Alternatives to SDXL-Lightning
- SDXL-Turbo
Same SDXL base distilled with ADD, but best at 512px and under a non-commercial research license, versus 1024px and OpenRAIL++ here.
- Latent Consistency Models
LCM-LoRA works on SD 1.5 and SSD-1B as well as SDXL, useful if your stack is not SDXL-only, but it has no full per-step UNet checkpoints.
- Z-Image
Turbo variant generates in 8 steps with bilingual text rendering under Apache-2.0, but needs 16 GB versus about 6 GB here.
