Qdrant Client
Official Python SDK for Qdrant with sync and async clients, gRPC support and a serverless local mode.
About
Python applications usually reach a Qdrant database through this official SDK, installed with pip install qdrant-client. It wraps every server endpoint with type hints, talks REST or gRPC (prefer_grpc speeds up bulk loads), and provides matching synchronous QdrantClient and asynchronous AsyncQdrantClient classes, plus upload_points and upload_collection helpers that batch big inserts. The standout feature is local mode: passing :memory: or a folder path gives the same API over an in-process store, so unit tests, CI jobs and notebooks run without a server, and moving to a real cluster later only changes the constructor arguments. An optional fastembed extra lets you pass raw text as models.Document objects and have embeddings computed on your machine with ONNX Runtime, on CPU or, via the separate fastembed-gpu extra, on GPU; Qdrant Cloud can embed server-side instead, but only on paid plans. Versions track the server closely and the package is Apache-2.0, free for commercial use. It suits Python RAG pipelines, LangChain or LlamaIndex vector stores, and prototypes that may later move to a managed cluster.
Should you use Qdrant Client?
Pick it when
Pick Qdrant Client when your Python code talks to Qdrant and you want sync and async APIs, batched uploads, built-in FastEmbed inference, and an in-process local mode so tests and prototypes run the same code without a server.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it if you have not chosen Qdrant, since it is only an SDK. For an embedded store with no server even in production, LanceDB or sqlite-vec fit better, and Postgres teams can query pgvector through their existing driver.
Alternatives to Qdrant Client
- Qdrant
The vector database server this SDK talks to; required for production scale, while the client's local mode only covers development and tests.
- LanceDB
Embedded in-process in production too, so there is no later move to a server; a different store, but fewer moving parts overall.
- FastEmbed
The embedding library the client calls for local inference; use it directly when you want embeddings without Qdrant in the loop.
