About
Open-sourced by Baidu in 2016, PaddlePaddle (Feijiang in Chinese) covers the same ground as PyTorch or TensorFlow: its own tensor library and autograd, eager execution by default, and conversion to static graphs for optimized deployment. Recent 3.x releases center on large-model work, including automatic parallelism driven by light sharding annotations, the CINN neural network compiler, FP8 quantization kernels, a Muon optimizer, and higher-order derivatives for physics and science workloads. Hardware breadth sets it apart: beyond x86 and ARM CPUs and NVIDIA CUDA, a pluggable custom device layer supports Kunlunxin XPU, Hygon DCU and other Chinese accelerators. Install with pip install paddlepaddle, or paddlepaddle-gpu matched to your CUDA version. Sibling projects include PaddleOCR, PaddleX, PaddleFormers, FastDeploy for LLM serving and Paddle Lite for phones and edge boards. Everything is Apache-2.0, so commercial use is unrestricted. Choose it mainly when you rely on PaddleOCR or other Paddle-native models, or must deploy onto Chinese hardware; English docs exist, but many release notes and community threads are Chinese only.
Should you use PaddlePaddle?
Pick it when
Pick this when you want Baidu's production kits such as PaddleOCR, PaddleNLP, or PaddleSeg end to end, or your team works mostly in the Chinese-language ecosystem where its documentation and community are strongest.
Look elsewhere when
Outside those kits, most new research code, pretrained models, and tutorials target PyTorch first, and Paddle's community leans toward Chinese-language resources. If OCR is your only goal, install PaddleOCR and treat Paddle as a dependency.

Where most new models, papers, and libraries land first, with a larger English-language community, but no bundled OCR or segmentation kits like Paddle's.
- TensorFlow
Comparable production deployment through Lite, Serving, and TensorFlow.js, with documentation and community centered on English rather than Chinese.
- PaddleOCR
If OCR is the whole job, use this toolkit directly; it still runs on Paddle underneath, but you skip learning the framework for your own models.
