About

Developed at Yandex, CatBoost implements gradient boosting over decision trees and is best known for handling categorical features natively, so users can skip manual one-hot or target encoding. Its ordered boosting scheme counters the target leakage that causes overfitting in conventional gradient boosting, and the library provides fast out-of-the-box GPU and multi-GPU training along with quick CPU inference. Interfaces exist for Python, R, and the command line, with Apache Spark integration for distributed learning, and the toolkit bundles visualization, cross-validation, parameter tuning, and feature importance analysis for model interpretation. CatBoost performs competitively with XGBoost and LightGBM on many tabular datasets and covers classification, regression, and ranking objectives, with model export to several runtimes for deployment. Released under the Apache 2.0 license, it is widely used by data scientists working on structured business data where categorical columns dominate.

Should you use CatBoost?

Pick it when

Choose CatBoost for tabular business data dominated by categorical columns, such as regions, product codes, or customer segments, when you want strong results without hand-built encodings and with less risk of target leakage.

Look elsewhere when

If your features are mostly numeric and the dataset is very large, LightGBM's histogram approach is built for speed and low memory. For small problems or quick linear baselines, scikit-learn is simpler to reach for first.

Alternatives to CatBoost

  • LightGBM

Histogram-based, leaf-wise training aimed at speed and low memory on big datasets, also handles categoricals, but without ordered boosting against leakage.

  • XGBoost

Long competition track record and native missing-value handling; a strong pick for mostly numeric data where CatBoost's categorical handling buys little.

  • scikit-learn

Broader classical toolkit for preprocessing, linear models, and baselines on CPU; start there on small data and move to CatBoost if boosting wins.
