Llama 3
Meta's 2024 open-weight 8B and 70B models; the original repo is archived and newer Llama versions replace it.
About
Meta's April 2024 Llama 3 release, in 8B and 70B sizes with base and instruct variants, raised expectations for what open-weight models could do in chat and coding. It brought a 128K-entry tokenizer vocabulary, grouped-query attention in both sizes, and pretraining on more than 15 trillion tokens, though its context window was only 8K tokens and Meta replaced it within three months. The meta-llama/llama3 repository, a minimal PyTorch inference example plus a download script, was deprecated with the Llama 3.1 launch in July 2024 and is now archived on GitHub, with its last commit in January 2025. The weights are still available from Hugging Face after accepting the Meta Llama 3 Community License, which allows commercial use but requires attribution and a separate license for services above 700 million monthly users, and they run in llama.cpp, Ollama, vLLM and Transformers. For new work, start from Llama 3.1 or 3.3 with 128K context through the llama-models repository, or from Llama 4 Scout and Maverick, and compare them against other current open-weight families before committing.
Should you use Llama 3?
Pick it when
Pick this only to reproduce results or keep compatibility with work built on the original Llama 3 8B or 70B checkpoints, such as existing fine-tunes or evaluations pinned to that release.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it for new work: context is just 8K tokens and the original repo is deprecated. Llama 3.1 keeps the same sizes with 128K context, tool calling, and a 405B option, and Llama 3.2 covers edge and vision.
Alternatives to Llama 3
- Llama 3.1
Same 8B and 70B sizes plus 405B, with 128K context, multilingual text, and tool calling, a direct upgrade under a similar community license.
- Qwen 2.5 / Qwen 3
Apache-2.0 instead of a Meta community license, with 0.5B to 235B sizes, 100+ languages, and thinking modes for harder problems.
- Gemma 4
Apache-2.0 with image input, 140+ languages, and up to 256K context at E2B to 31B, a newer permissive pick in the small and mid range.
