About

HumanSignal's labeling server pairs a Django backend with a React front end, giving annotators one browser workspace for text, images, audio, video, HTML and time series. Each project's interface is defined in an XML-like tag configuration, and templates cover common jobs such as classification, named entities, bounding boxes, polygons and transcription. Data comes from uploaded files or synced S3, Google Cloud Storage and Azure buckets, and results export to JSON, COCO, Pascal VOC and more. Linking a model through the separate ML backend SDK enables pre-labeling, online retraining and active learning, while a REST API, Python SDK and webhooks fit it into pipelines. Install with pip on Python 3.10+, with Docker, or with Docker Compose bundling Nginx and PostgreSQL for production; it listens on port 8080 with SQLite by default. The community edition is Apache-2.0 and usable commercially, but role-based access, workspaces, advanced cloud storage auth and some AI assistants are reserved for the paid Starter Cloud and Enterprise tiers. A sensible default for ML teams wanting self-hosted labeling.

Should you use Label Studio?

Pick it when

Pick it when people need to label mixed data types (text, images, audio, video, time series) in one self-hosted tool, with the option to plug in your own model for pre-labeling and export straight to common training formats.

Look elsewhere when

Vision teams labeling 3D point clouds or wanting built-in SAM and YOLO assist, rather than wiring an external inference backend, are better served by CVAT. For LLM preference data reviewed by experts, Argilla fits better; to just find bad labels, use Cleanlab.

Alternatives to Label Studio

  • CVAT

Vision only but deeper: 3D point clouds, cuboids, built-in SAM and YOLO assist, and consensus QA, with an MIT licensed core.

  • Argilla

Built for LLM-era text work such as preference pairs and response review, set up from a Python SDK; Label Studio is the broader pick for audio, video, and time series.

  • Doccano

MIT and rated difficulty 1 versus 2, quick to stand up for span labeling and classification, but supports fewer data types and no time series.

  • Cleanlab

Ranks likely label errors statistically so you know which items to send back for review; it does not provide a labeling interface.
