FiftyOne
Open-source toolkit for building high-quality datasets and computer vision models.
About
FiftyOne by Voxel51 is an open-source toolkit for curating, visualizing, and evaluating computer vision datasets and the models trained on them. A Python library pairs with an interactive web app: users load images, videos, and labels, then filter, tag, and explore them, plot embeddings to find clusters and outliers, and evaluate predictions to surface failure modes and annotation mistakes. Integrations cover PyTorch, Hugging Face, and Ultralytics, plus annotation platforms like CVAT and Label Studio, and built-in Dataset and Model Zoos provide common benchmarks and pretrained models. Under the hood it uses MongoDB for scalable dataset storage, supports Python 3.10 through 3.13, and offers a plugin system for extending the app with custom panels and workflows. Apache 2.0 licensed and installable via pip or Docker, FiftyOne is used by computer vision engineers and ML researchers who need to understand why models fail and to improve dataset quality rather than simply collect more data.
Should you use FiftyOne?
Pick it when
Pick this when you already have a vision dataset and trained models and need to find why the model fails: mislabeled or duplicate images, outlier clusters in embeddings, or weak slices, before collecting more data.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it as your main labeling tool, since it curates and evaluates but hands annotation off to CVAT or Label Studio. For plain format conversion, Datumaro does the job without FiftyOne's MongoDB backend.
Alternatives to FiftyOne
- Datumaro
CPU-only CLI for converting, merging, splitting, and validating datasets, much lighter but with no visual app, embeddings, or model evaluation.
- Cleanlab
Scores likely label errors statistically across image, text, audio, and tabular data, but the open source library has no visual app for exploring them.
- CVAT
Where you actually fix the labels FiftyOne flags; FiftyOne integrates with it, so the two are usually paired rather than picked between.
