About

KoboldCpp packs local AI text generation into a single self contained executable with no installation required. Built on llama.cpp and descended from the KoboldAI project, it runs GGML and GGUF models with broad backward compatibility, then layers on far more than text: image generation with Stable Diffusion, SDXL, SD3, and Flux, speech recognition through Whisper, text-to-speech, and multimodal image understanding. The bundled KoboldAI Lite web UI offers chat, instruct, adventure, and story writing modes with editing tools, while the server exposes KoboldCpp, OpenAI, and Ollama compatible API endpoints plus tool calling and MCP support. Precompiled binaries cover Windows, macOS, and Linux with GPU offloading, and it also runs on Google Colab, Docker, and Android through Termux. Hobbyists running roleplay and story models locally form the core audience, alongside anyone wanting a zero setup local inference server. Released under the AGPL-3.0 license.

Should you use Kobold.cpp?

Pick it when

Pick KoboldCpp when you do roleplay, story, or adventure writing with GGUF models on your own PC and want one executable with no install, a writing-focused UI, plus image generation, Whisper, and TTS in the same tool.

Look elsewhere when

Skip it if AGPL-3.0 is a problem for software you distribute or modify, or if you need throughput for many users; vLLM or Aphrodite batch far better. For plain app integration, Ollama has a wider ecosystem.

Alternatives to Kobold.cpp

  • Llamafile

Also a single no-install file, Apache-2.0 licensed and able to bundle the model itself, but no story modes, image generation, or text-to-speech.

  • Text Generation WebUI

Browser UI that switches among several backends and model formats, more flexible, but a heavier Python install than one executable.

  • Ollama

Simpler model management and a bigger integration ecosystem under MIT, but no built-in writing UI, image generation, or speech.

  • LM Studio

Polished desktop model browser and chat with MLX on Macs, but closed source and without story-writing modes.
