LM Studio
Desktop application for discovering, downloading, and running local LLMs.
About
LM Studio wraps local LLM inference in a desktop application for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It provides a graphical interface for discovering and downloading open models from Hugging Face, chatting with them offline, and serving them to other applications through a local OpenAI-compatible API. Under the hood it runs llama.cpp for GGUF models and Apple's MLX engine on Apple Silicon, detecting hardware and suggesting settings such as GPU offload automatically. Recent releases add agentic features, on-device voice transcription, and document chat. The application itself is proprietary but free for personal use, with open source companion SDKs for Python and JavaScript and a command line tool for headless operation. Typical users range from people who want a private chat client running entirely on their own machine to developers prototyping against local models before deploying elsewhere.
Should you use LM Studio?
Pick it when
Pick LM Studio when you want the easiest graphical way to browse Hugging Face models, see what fits your hardware, and chat or serve an OpenAI-compatible API locally, especially on Apple Silicon where it adds the MLX engine.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it if you need open source software you can audit or redistribute, since the app is proprietary; Jan and KoboldCpp are open alternatives. For scripted Linux servers and containers, Ollama or llama.cpp is the common choice.
Alternatives to LM Studio
- Jan
Open source desktop chat with a local API and built-in switching to cloud providers, trading some of LM Studio's model-browsing polish.
- Ollama
Open source with a larger integration ecosystem and a Docker image, better as a background server, but less visual model discovery.
- MLX
The Apple framework behind LM Studio's Mac engine, giving direct scripting and fine-tuning control, but with no GUI at all.
