InternVL 2.5
OpenGVLab's open multimodal model family for images, documents, charts and video, from 1B to 78B parameters.
About
OpenGVLab's InternVL line couples an InternViT image encoder with an existing language model, Qwen2.5 or InternLM2.5 depending on size, through an MLP projector. Version 2.5, released in December 2024, spans seven checkpoints from 1B to 78B parameters; smaller ones use a 300M vision tower, while 26B and up use the 6B InternViT. Large images are split into 448 pixel tiles and compressed with pixel unshuffle, keeping token counts manageable for dense documents, charts, screenshots, multi-image prompts and sampled video frames. Beyond inference code, the repo carries fine-tuning recipes including LoRA, the MPO preference-optimization method and its data pipeline, evaluation scripts, format converters and a Streamlit chat demo, with LMDeploy and Transformers as the usual serving routes. InternVL3 and 3.5 live in the same repo. A single consumer GPU handles the 1B to 8B models; 38B and 78B need multi-GPU nodes. Code and 2.5 weights are MIT, but each checkpoint also inherits its bundled LLM's license, so check Qwen terms before commercial use. Aimed at researchers and teams building visual document understanding.
Should you use InternVL 2.5?
Pick it when
Pick this for self-hosted document, chart, and table understanding or multi-image reasoning when you need an MIT license and a choice of sizes to match your GPU, starting around 12 GB of VRAM.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it if you need point coordinates for counting or UI grounding, which Molmo is built for, or CPU and edge deployment, where Moondream fits. For basic image chat on 8 GB, Qwen-VL is lighter, and newer InternVL3 versions extend this line.
Alternatives to InternVL 2.5
- Qwen-VL
Apache-2.0 vision-language model with OCR and grounding plus hosted Plus and Max tiers, a similar job with an easy path to managed scale.
- Molmo
Apache-2.0 with fully open PixMo training data and point outputs for counting and UI grounding, where InternVL centers on OCR, charts, and tables.
- Moondream
Runs on CPUs or small GPUs with structured caption, detect, and point skills, much lighter, but 3.x weights carry a BSL-derived license.
- Pixtral
Apache-2.0 12B with 128K context and multi-image chat that keeps strong text-only performance, a single size rather than a range.
