FishAudio S1-mini
Distilled 0.5B text-to-speech model from Fish Audio with voice cloning and emotion markers, non-commercial only.
About
Fish Audio distilled this 0.5B text-to-speech model from its proprietary 4B S1, which was trained on over two million hours of speech. The open checkpoint uses a dual autoregressive design that predicts codec tokens and decodes them to audio, speaks 13 languages including English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic, and clones a voice from a short reference clip without fine-tuning. Parenthesized markers in the input text such as (excited), (whispering), or (laughing) steer emotion, tone, and nonverbal sounds, and the model was tuned with online RLHF. Weights sit in a gated Hugging Face repo that asks you to accept usage terms. Until the March 2026 S2 release, the fish-speech codebase was built around it, with command-line inference, a WebUI, an HTTP API server, and LoRA fine-tuning on Linux or WSL; those docs listed 12 GB of GPU memory, half what the newer 4B S2 Pro needs, and current docs center on S2 Pro. Weights are CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0 and the code falls under the Fish Audio Research License, so any commercial use needs a separate deal with Fish Audio. It targets hobbyists and researchers.
Should you use FishAudio S1-mini?
Pick it when
Pick S1-mini when you want Fish Speech style zero-shot cloning and multilingual output on a consumer GPU with around 4 GB, or for latency-sensitive local deployments where the full model is too slow or too heavy.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it when maximum fidelity matters more than speed, where the full Fish Speech model fits better, or for commercial launches, since the S1-mini weights are CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0. Kokoro is lighter still if you need no cloning.
Alternatives to FishAudio S1-mini
- Fish Speech
Full S-series model with 80-plus languages, inline delivery tags, and multi-speaker output, higher quality at the cost of more VRAM and slower inference.
- Chatterbox TTS
Same 4 GB class with a low-latency Turbo variant and emotion control, under the MIT license where S1-mini's weights are non-commercial.
- NeuTTS Air
Clones from 3 s of audio in real time on mid-range hardware with GGUF builds and no GPU required, though its output carries a watermark.
- Kokoro TTS
82M Apache-2.0 model that runs on CPU, much lighter, but with fixed voices and no cloning.
