About

Resemble AI publishes this family of open-weight speech synthesis models along with PyTorch inference code, installable from PyPI as chatterbox-tts. Each model can copy a speaker from a brief audio sample with no fine-tuning step. The lineup covers the original 0.5B English model, which offers exaggeration and classifier-free guidance controls for steering emotion and pacing; a 0.5B multilingual model, now at V3, handling 23 languages; a 350M Turbo model for English voice agents whose distilled decoder runs one step instead of ten and which reads inline tags like [laugh] or [cough]; and a 110M Nano variant aimed at CPUs and on-device use. Six single-language fine-tunes add regional variants such as Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Hindi. Code runs on CUDA, Apple MPS, or plain CPU and was developed against Python 3.11. Both the repository and the Hugging Face weights use the MIT license, so commercial use is permitted, though every generated clip carries an inaudible Perth watermark that a bundled detector can find later. A strong option for self-hosted narration, dubbing, or voice-agent pipelines.

Should you use Chatterbox TTS?

Pick it when

Pick Chatterbox when you need zero-shot voice cloning with emotion control under the MIT license on a GPU with around 4 GB, using the low-latency Turbo model for English agents or the multilingual model across 23-plus languages.

Look elsewhere when

Skip it if you want a whole multi-speaker conversation generated from one transcript, which Dia or FireRedTTS 2 do natively, or need more than its 23-plus languages, where Fish Speech covers 80-plus.

Alternatives to Chatterbox TTS

  • F5-TTS

Also clones from a short clip with a full Gradio UI and fast inference, but its pretrained checkpoints are CC-BY-NC, so it cannot ship commercially the way Chatterbox can.

  • Fish Speech

Covers 80-plus languages with inline delivery tags and multi-speaker output, but its weights carry a research license that needs review before commercial use.

  • Kokoro TTS

82M Apache-2.0 model that runs in real time on CPU in eight languages, lighter to host, but it offers fixed voices with no cloning from your own clip.

  • XTTS

Clones from a 6 s clip across 17 languages with sub-200 ms streaming, but its weight license restricts commercial use and Coqui the company has shut down.
