FAISS
Efficient similarity search library by Meta for dense vector clustering and retrieval.
About
FAISS, Facebook AI Similarity Search, is Meta's library for efficient similarity search and clustering of dense vectors, and it underpins much of the modern vector database and retrieval ecosystem. Written in C++ with complete Python and NumPy wrappers, it implements a wide range of index types: exact brute-force baselines, inverted file and product quantization indexes for compressed billion-scale search, binary vector indexes, and graph-based methods such as HNSW and NSG. Supported metrics include L2, inner product, and cosine similarity, and key algorithms have GPU implementations for NVIDIA CUDA, AMD ROCm, and the NVIDIA cuVS backend. FAISS is designed to scale to collections that do not fit in RAM, with tooling for evaluating the speed and accuracy tradeoffs of each index type. Released under the MIT license, it is used by researchers and engineers doing nearest neighbor retrieval for embeddings, recommendation systems, and semantic search.
Should you use FAISS?
Pick it when
Pick FAISS when nearest-neighbor search runs inside your own Python or C++ code at large scale, you need compressed indexes such as IVF with product quantization for data that outgrows RAM, or you want GPU search on CUDA or ROCm.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it if you want a database: FAISS has no server, metadata store, or query API beyond vectors, and picking an index type takes benchmarking. Qdrant or Milvus add those layers, and HNSWlib or USearch are lighter if HNSW is all you need.
Alternatives to FAISS
- HNSWlib
Header-only with no dependencies beyond C++11 and easy incremental updates; one algorithm only, with no quantization or GPU paths.
- ScaNN
Anisotropic quantization tuned for inner-product ranking, but Linux-only with AVX and FMA or NEON required, where FAISS also offers GPU indexes.
- Milvus
Distributed vector database with filtering, persistence, and GPU support behind an API; the step up when many services share the index, at the cost of running a server.
- USearch
A single header of about 3 thousand lines versus roughly 84 thousand for FAISS, easy to embed in apps; HNSW only, without IVF-PQ or GPU indexes.
