EchoMimic
Research code that animates a single portrait photo into a talking video from speech audio, landmarks, or both.
About
Ant Group's Alipay terminal technology team released EchoMimic as research code for turning one still portrait plus a voice recording into a talking-head video. The pipeline is diffusion based: a reference UNet holds the identity of the source photo, a denoising UNet with a temporal motion module produces the frames, Whisper tiny encodes the audio, and a face locator injects facial landmarks, so the face can follow sound alone, a landmark sequence, or sound plus selected landmarks. Accelerated checkpoints cut a 240-frame clip from roughly seven minutes to under a minute on a V100. Weights download from Hugging Face or ModelScope, and the repo ships command-line inference scripts and a Gradio web app, with a community ComfyUI node available. Expect Linux, CUDA 11.7 or newer, and an NVIDIA card; the authors tested on GPUs ranging from 16 GB to 80 GB. Code is Apache-2.0, but the authors frame the release as academic research and the model card names no weight license, so clear commercial use first. Successors EchoMimicV2 and V3 live in separate repositories. Suits researchers and avatar or dubbing prototypers.
Should you use EchoMimic?
Pick it when
Pick it when you want speech-driven portrait video and also need to steer expressions by editing or supplying facial landmarks, under Apache-2.0 so commercial work is allowed, on an 8 GB GPU.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it if you only need the lips on existing footage matched to new audio (LatentSync or MuseTalk), want expressions copied from a driving video rather than audio (LivePortrait), or need several characters speaking in one scene (HunyuanVideo-Avatar).
Alternatives to EchoMimic
- HunyuanVideo-Avatar
Adds emotion control, multiple speakers, and full-body or cartoon avatars, but needs 10 to 24 GB and its license excludes the EU, UK, and South Korea.
- MuseTalk
Real-time 30+ fps on a V100 at a 6 GB floor with MIT code and weights, but it only redraws a 256x256 face region, so a still photo gets no head motion or landmark control.
- LivePortrait
Lighter at 6 GB and near real time with explicit eye and lip retargeting, but it copies motion from a driving video of a face and does not take audio at all.
