About

DWPose implements the ICCV 2023 work on whole-body pose estimation with two-stage distillation, producing models that detect body, foot, face, and hand keypoints from images. The family spans tiny through large variants built on the RTMPose architecture, ranging from about 0.5 to 10 GFLOPS and reaching up to 0.665 average precision on the COCO-WholeBody benchmark, so users can trade accuracy against compute. Distillation lets the smaller models keep much of the teacher's accuracy at a fraction of the size. The project builds on the MMPose framework but also publishes ONNX exports that run without MMPose installed, with checkpoints distributed through Hugging Face and Google Drive. Beyond research use, DWPose has become a common conditioning signal for ControlNet in Stable Diffusion pipelines, where its full-body skeletons guide pose-controlled image and animation generation. The code is released by IDEA Research under the Apache 2.0 license.

Should you use DWPose?

Pick it when

Pick it when you need body, hand, face, and foot keypoints as conditioning for ControlNet, MimicMotion, or Champ, or a permissive pose estimator you can ship as ONNX on a 4 GB GPU without installing MMPose.

Look elsewhere when

Skip it if you need 3D skeletons or animation-ready motion data: FreeMoCap reconstructs 3D from multiple cameras. For phone or browser apps MediaPipe fits better, and for a full toolbox with training and deployment export, use RTMPose in MMPose.

Alternatives to DWPose

  • OpenPose

The original 135-keypoint whole-body detector with a C++ API and CPU backend, but free only for non-commercial use where DWPose is Apache-2.0.

  • RTMPose

The architecture DWPose's models are built on, inside the full MMPose toolbox with training tools, benchmarks, and 3D variants, at the cost of a heavier install.

  • MediaPipe

Runs on Android, iOS, web, and edge devices with hardware acceleration, so it suits shipped apps better, while DWPose suits GPU diffusion pipelines.

  • FreeMoCap

Calibrated multi-camera 3D skeletons exported for Blender, and no GPU required, but AGPL-3.0 and it needs a camera setup instead of single images.
