Triton Inference Server
NVIDIA's multi-framework model server with dynamic batching, ensembles and HTTP and gRPC endpoints.
About
NVIDIA's Triton Inference Server lets one process host many models from different frameworks behind a shared HTTP/REST and gRPC interface that follows the KServe v2 protocol. Models sit in a versioned model repository, and pluggable backends run them: TensorRT, TensorRT-LLM, vLLM, ONNX Runtime, PyTorch, OpenVINO, RAPIDS FIL, and a Python backend for custom logic. The scheduler adds dynamic batching, sequence batching with implicit state, several concurrent instances of a model across GPUs, and ensembles or business logic scripting to chain pre and post processing. Prometheus metrics expose GPU utilization, throughput and latency, and C and Java in-process APIs allow embedding at the edge. The usual route is the prebuilt tritonserver container from NGC with a mounted model repository; CPU-only and ARM builds exist, though NVIDIA GPUs gain the most. Companion repos supply Python, C++ and Java clients and perf_analyzer for load testing. The server is BSD-3-Clause, so commercial use is fine, with paid support sold through NVIDIA AI Enterprise. Aimed at MLOps teams serving mixed model types in production.
Should you use Triton Inference Server?
Pick it when
Pick Triton when you serve many models from mixed frameworks on NVIDIA GPUs at scale and need dynamic batching, concurrent model execution, and ensembles to raise utilization, especially with TensorRT-optimized models.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it for a few Python models or a small team: configuration is involved, it is rated hard, and its advantage comes from NVIDIA GPUs with 8 GB or more of VRAM. For LLM-only serving vLLM is simpler, and BentoML or LitServe are quicker for custom Python.
Alternatives to Triton Inference Server
- vLLM
Purpose-built for LLMs with PagedAttention and an OpenAI-compatible server, simpler for LLM-only work but not a multi-framework server.
- TensorFlow Serving
Easier for TensorFlow-only fleets with built-in version management, but limited once you add PyTorch or ONNX models.
- BentoML
Python-first and easier to customize, with adaptive batching and no GPU requirement, trading some of Triton's low-level GPU scheduling.
- KServe
Adds Kubernetes autoscaling, scale-to-zero, and canaries around model servers, and can run Triton underneath as its runtime.
