About

SGLang is a serving framework for large language models and vision-language models, developed under LMSYS, focused on low-latency, high-throughput inference. Its runtime combines RadixAttention prefix caching, continuous batching, paged attention, a zero-overhead CPU scheduler, prefill-decode disaggregation, and speculative decoding to scale from a single GPU to large multi-node clusters. Structured output is a distinguishing feature: constrained decoding driven by a compressed finite state machine produces JSON and regex-constrained text substantially faster than conventional approaches. The framework supports model families including Llama, Qwen, and DeepSeek along with embedding and diffusion models, exposes an OpenAI-compatible API, and offers FP8, FP4, and INT4 quantization. Hardware support spans NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, Intel Xeon CPUs, Google TPUs, and Ascend NPUs. The project reports production deployments across hundreds of thousands of GPUs at companies including xAI and major cloud providers, and the code is open source under the Apache 2.0 license.

Should you use SGLang?

Pick it when

You serve LLMs or VLMs to many users and care about low latency, heavy shared prefixes from agents or RAG, or fast JSON and regex-constrained output, on anything from one GPU to multi-node NVIDIA, AMD, TPU, or Ascend clusters.

Look elsewhere when

Skip it for laptop or single-user local use, where Ollama or llama.cpp are simpler, or if you plan to adopt vLLM-based control planes such as llm-d or AIBrix, which orchestrate vLLM rather than SGLang.

Alternatives to SGLang

  • vLLM

The closest substitute, with more model architectures and a larger tooling ecosystem, while SGLang leans harder on prefix caching and structured output.

  • LMDeploy

TurboMind engine with broad VLM coverage such as InternVL, but its fast path is CUDA-focused where SGLang also runs on AMD, TPUs, and Ascend.

  • TensorRT-LLM

Tuned NVIDIA kernels down to FP4, but NVIDIA-only and rated harder to set up, where SGLang also covers AMD, TPUs, and Ascend.

  • NVIDIA Dynamo

Adds cross-node orchestration, KV-aware routing, and KV offloading on top of SGLang workers when a single deployment is not enough.
