About

Riffusion turned Stable Diffusion into a music generator by fine-tuning it on spectrogram images, the visual representation of audio frequencies over time. A text prompt produces a spectrogram, which is then converted into playable audio, and prompt interpolation lets the system morph smoothly between styles for continuous, real-time generation. The repository includes the diffusion pipeline with image conditioning, spectrogram conversion utilities, a command-line interface, a Streamlit playground for interactive experimentation, and a Flask server for inference APIs. It targets Python 3.9 to 3.10 and runs on CUDA GPUs, Apple Silicon, or CPU, with a GPU recommended for real-time use. Released under the MIT license, the open source project is no longer actively maintained, but the code remains a widely referenced demonstration of applying image diffusion to audio, used by musicians, researchers, and hobbyists exploring AI music.

Should you use Riffusion?

Pick it when

Pick Riffusion when you want to tinker with how image diffusion can make music, or need a simple MIT demo of prompt interpolation that morphs between styles, running on CUDA, Apple Silicon, or CPU with a Streamlit playground.

Look elsewhere when

Skip it for anything you need to maintain: the project is no longer actively maintained and targets Python 3.9 to 3.10. For live, steerable music Magenta RealTime is the current open option, and for songs, ACE-Step.

Alternatives to Riffusion

  • Magenta RealTime

Current live music model with text and audio steering, an AUv3 plugin, and commercial-friendly CC-BY-4.0 weights, but tuned for Apple Silicon.

  • MusicGPT

MusicGen in one binary, simpler to install than a Python 3.9 environment, but no style interpolation and non-commercial weights.

  • Stable Audio Open

Text-to-audio with 44.1 kHz stereo up to 47 seconds and documented training data, a more modern base but under the Stability Community License.
