LocalAI
Self-hosted server that exposes OpenAI-compatible endpoints for text, speech, image, and video models.
About
Point a client written for the OpenAI API at a LocalAI server and it keeps working after a base URL change; the same server also answers Anthropic, Ollama, and ElevenLabs style requests. Behind that endpoint is a small Go core that fetches inference backends on demand as separate container images, wrapping engines like vLLM, llama.cpp, whisper.cpp, MLX, and diffusers, along with several C++ engines the team writes itself for speech, vision, and 3D work. Together they cover chat with tool calling, embeddings and reranking, transcription, text to speech with voice cloning, image and video generation, and object detection. Recent releases added a React web UI, API keys with per-user quotas, built-in agents that speak MCP, and a distributed mode that spreads models across several machines. Start with the CPU-only Docker image, pick a CUDA, ROCm, Intel, or Vulkan image for acceleration, or install the macOS app. LocalAI itself is MIT licensed with no commercial restrictions, while every model you download keeps its own license. It fits teams that want a private, self-hosted stand-in for hosted AI APIs on hardware they already own.
Should you use LocalAI?
Pick it when
Pick LocalAI when you want one Docker container that replaces OpenAI's chat, embeddings, image, and audio endpoints on your own server, including CPU-only boxes, so existing OpenAI-client apps switch by changing a base URL.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it if you only need chat models on a desktop, where Ollama or LM Studio is simpler, or need high-concurrency GPU serving, where vLLM batches far better. Breadth across modalities also means more configuration to tune.
Alternatives to LocalAI
- Ollama
Simpler for chat and embedding models with a bigger integration ecosystem, but focused on language models rather than image and audio endpoints.
- Xinference
Also serves LLM, embedding, speech, and image models behind one API, adding multi-node clusters and a web UI, but a heavier Python install.
- vLLM
Much higher throughput for concurrent chat on GPUs with 16 GB or more, but built for GPUs and with no image or audio generation endpoints.
- Lemonade
Similar multi-modality OpenAI-compatible server tuned for AMD NPUs and GPUs with native installers, while LocalAI centers on Docker.
