About

Validation sits at the center of this framework: a Guard wraps each call to a language model, runs one or more validators on the prompt and the reply, and applies a chosen policy when a check fails, such as raising an exception, auto-fixing, filtering, refraining, or asking the model again. Ready-made validators cover regex patterns, PII, toxic language, competitor mentions, and dozens more, and a Guard can also force output into a Pydantic schema, using function calling where the model supports it and schema instructions in the prompt where it does not. The guardrails start command serves named guards over a Flask REST API that also accepts OpenAI-style chat requests, with Gunicorn inside Docker suggested for production. During 2026 the team retired its hub installer and free hosted inference, so validators now install as regular PyPI packages and model-backed checks run locally or on an endpoint you host. Requires Python 3.10 to 3.13 and is Apache-2.0. A fit for teams adding compliance or output-format checks to chat and agent apps.

Should you use Guardrails AI?

Pick it when

Use Guardrails AI when you need to validate and correct LLM outputs in Python, checking structure, PII, toxicity, or factual consistency with composable validators from its Hub, whichever model provider you call.

Look elsewhere when

It checks outputs after generation; it does not steer dialogue or audit agent plans. For topic control and tool-call governance, NeMo Guardrails fits; for prompt injection in agents, LlamaFirewall; for guaranteed valid JSON, Outlines.

Alternatives to Guardrails AI

  • NeMo Guardrails

Programmable dialogue rails in Colang that control topics and tool calls; broader conversation control, steeper learning curve.

  • LlamaFirewall

Scans agent inputs, reasoning traces, and generated code for injection and hijacking; agent-security focus, fewer output validators.

  • Outlines

Guarantees schema-valid output at decode time instead of validating afterward; no retries, but needs a supported model backend.

  • Presidio

Dedicated PII detection and anonymization across text and images; deeper on PII, nothing for toxicity or output structure.
