About

Open-set detection went mainstream in 2023 with Grounding DINO from IDEA Research: hand it an image plus a short phrase and it draws boxes around whatever the words describe, with no class-specific training. Paired with Segment Anything as Grounded SAM, it made text-prompted masks easy and became a common auto-labeling engine for building training sets. The official repository has been quiet since August 2024, when its final commit linked to Grounded SAM 2; its only tagged release dates from April 2023, the training code was never published, and the custom CUDA extension still breaks many installs. The model itself holds up: the tiny and base checkpoints remain on Hugging Face under Apache-2.0, and the Hugging Face Transformers port runs them without the fragile compile step. Newer IDEA models in the series, starting with Grounding DINO 1.5, are offered only through a hosted API. For new projects, use the Transformers port, Grounded SAM 2 when you need tracking across video frames, or Meta's SAM 3 when you want concept prompts that return masks directly, after checking its custom SAM License.

Should you use Grounding DINO?

Pick it when

Pick Grounding DINO when you must detect objects named in free text with no training, for example auto-labeling data or finding rare classes, and accuracy matters more than frame rate, with Apache 2.0 terms and a 4 GB GPU.

Look elsewhere when

Skip it for live video, where YOLO-World keeps real-time speed though under GPL-3.0. If you need masks or tracking, Grounded SAM 2 or SAM 3 builds on the idea, and for fixed classes a fine-tuned detector is faster.

Alternatives to Grounding DINO

  • YOLO-World

Real-time open-vocabulary detection on the YOLO architecture for video streams, but GPL-3.0 copyleft where Grounding DINO is Apache 2.0.

  • OWL-ViT

Google's CLIP-based open-vocabulary detector, also Apache 2.0, but officially released in the JAX Scenic research codebase, harder to fit into PyTorch pipelines.

  • Grounded SAM 2

Adds SAM 2 masks and video tracking on top of Grounding DINO boxes, at roughly double the GPU memory floor.

  • Florence-2

MIT multi-task model that also captions and reads text, convenient for one-model labeling, but not a dedicated open-set detector.
