Gradio
Python library for wrapping models or functions in a browser UI, with share links and API clients.
About
Gradio turns a Python function into a web interface by mapping its arguments and return values onto UI components, so a model demo needs no HTML or JavaScript. The quickest route is gr.Interface, which builds a form from lists of inputs and outputs; gr.ChatInterface does the same for chatbots with streamed replies; and gr.Blocks exposes layouts, events and state for full applications, which is how large projects such as the AUTOMATIC1111 Stable Diffusion web UI were built. Dozens of components handle text, images, audio, video, files, dataframes and plots, and you can write custom components with a Svelte frontend. Every app also exposes an API that the gradio_client Python package or the @gradio/client JavaScript package can call, and passing mcp_server=True at launch lets AI agents use the same functions as MCP tools. Calling launch(share=True) opens a temporary public URL tunneled to your machine, and Hugging Face Spaces hosts apps free. Install with pip on Python 3.10 or newer; the 6.x series is current. Apache 2.0 licensed and maintained by Hugging Face, it suits ML engineers who need a usable front end fast.
Should you use Gradio?
Pick it when
Pick Gradio when you need a quick interactive demo of a model or Python function, including image, audio, or file inputs, shared through a public link or a Hugging Face Space, written entirely in Python or a notebook.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it for a polished end-user chat product or a multi-user chat server, since Gradio is a demo builder. Use assistant-ui or CopilotKit for product UIs, Open WebUI or LibreChat for team chat, and Streamlit for dashboard-heavy apps.
Alternatives to Gradio
- Streamlit
Better for data dashboards and reports with layouts and caching, but its rerun-the-script model is less natural for wrapping one model's inputs and outputs.
- Chainlit
Purpose-built for chat and agent step tracking, better for LLM assistants, but narrower than Gradio for image, audio, or tabular model demos.
- Text Generation WebUI
A complete local LLM app built on Gradio, so no chat code to write for running GGUF models, but it is listed at around 8 GB of VRAM, with CPU-only builds as a fallback.
