Crawlee
Apify's Node.js and Python library for building scrapers that rotate proxies and switch between HTTP and browsers.
About
Apify maintains this scraping toolkit in two editions, one for Node.js and TypeScript and a Python port, both aimed at crawlers that hold up on real-world sites. Its crawler classes share a common interface, ranging from fast HTTP fetching with Cheerio, JSDOM or BeautifulSoup parsing to full browser rendering through Playwright or Puppeteer, and an adaptive crawler picks the approach page by page. Around that core it manages a persistent request queue, retries and routing, concurrency that tracks available CPU and memory, session-aware proxy rotation, and generated browser fingerprints and TLS signatures that make traffic look less automated. Output goes to local datasets and key-value stores by default. The stable 3.x JavaScript line runs on Node.js 16 or later, while the 4.0 release candidate needs 22.13, and the Python edition requires 3.10 or newer; a create command scaffolds a starter project. Everything is Apache 2.0 and runs on any machine, with the Apify cloud as an optional host. For AI work it is a dependable way to gather pages for RAG corpora, fine-tuning sets or agent tools when plain fetch scripts get blocked.
Should you use Crawlee?
Pick it when
Pick Crawlee when you need to crawl large or bot-protected sites reliably from Node.js or Python, with proxy rotation, autoscaled concurrency, and a choice of plain HTTP or headless Chrome, and you will write the extraction logic.
Look elsewhere when
Skip it if the goal is LLM-ready text with minimal code: Crawl4AI and Firecrawl output clean Markdown directly, while Crawlee focuses on fetching and crawling and leaves extraction and cleanup to your code.
Alternatives to Crawlee
- Crawl4AI
Outputs RAG-ready Markdown out of the box with LLM-oriented extraction strategies, so less code for AI pipelines, but it is a Python library where Crawlee also covers Node.js.
- Firecrawl
API that returns Markdown or structured JSON with JavaScript rendering handled, simpler to call, but AGPL-3.0 where Crawlee is Apache-2.0.
- ScrapeGraphAI
Describe the data in plain language and an LLM builds the extraction, quick for varied layouts but adds model cost and latency on every page.
- Browser Use
Lets an LLM agent click through pages and fill forms, suited to interactive multi-step tasks rather than bulk crawling of many URLs, at model cost per step.
