About

The CogVideoX line from Zhipu AI and Tsinghua generates short clips from text prompts or a starting image, and version 1.5, from November 2024, is the newest pair: a 5B text-to-video model rendering at 1360 by 768 and a 5B image-to-video model that accepts flexible frame sizes within set bounds. Both output 5 or 10 second videos at 16 frames per second from English prompts capped near 224 tokens. The repo bundles inference scripts for Hugging Face diffusers and the SwissArmyTransformer (SAT) stack, a Gradio demo, LoRA fine-tuning code, DDIM inversion, and a helper that uses an LLM to expand terse prompts into the long descriptions it was trained on. Memory needs are steep: the SAT path wants about 76 GB, while diffusers with CPU offloading and INT8 quantization can squeeze into roughly 7 to 10 GB, and even one A100 needs about 1000 seconds per 5 second clip, with quantized runs slower. Code is Apache 2.0, but the 1.5 weights use the CogVideoX License: research is free, and commercial use is free after registration up to one million monthly visits, past which a further license is required. Suited to researchers with big GPUs.

Should you use CogVideo 1.5?

Pick it when

Pick CogVideoX 1.5 when you want the 5B CogVideoX line at longer, sharper output, roughly 10 seconds at up to 1360x768, or image-to-video from inputs at arbitrary resolution, and you are comfortable with the SAT-based code.

Look elsewhere when

Skip it if you need a permissive license: the 5B weights carry the custom CogVideoX license, unlike the Apache-2.0 2B model. The Diffusers path is still being adapted, so earlier CogVideoX checkpoints or Wan 2.1 are smoother to script.

Alternatives to CogVideo 1.5

  • CogVideoX

Earlier 2B and 5B checkpoints with mature Diffusers and quantization paths, down to about 4 GB for 2B, but shorter 6-second clips at 720x480.

  • Wan 2.1

Apache-2.0 throughout, with 720p 14B and 8 GB 1.3B models plus first-last-frame and editing variants, avoiding CogVideoX's custom 5B license.

  • Pyramid Flow

MIT-licensed alternative that also reaches 10-second clips, at 768p and 24 fps, and squeezes into about 8 GB with sequential CPU offload.

  • HunyuanVideo 1.5

8.3B text and image-to-video model that Tencent says runs in about 14 GB with offloading, but its license excludes the EU, UK, and South Korea.
